Add some extra spark to your custom background and make it move! You can now include 30 seconds of animation in the background area of the Yahoo! Front Page to complement the overall event and engage more eyeballs.
Example
Requirements
Due to the pervasive nature of a background change, please make sure your animated background adheres to the requirements below. Custom and animated backgrounds are also subject to additional Editorial approval and Yahoo! reserves the right to reject any background that it deems inappropriate.
- Requirements on colours and style for the custom static background also apply to the animated background
- Do not use logos, buttons or literal messages (especially core product messages as some users may not be able to see the background due to small screen resolutions). Use the animated background to enhance the overall visual message of the event and leave the details and call-to-action to inline banners like the 300×250
- The rest of the event (ie, 300×250 and 400×60 banners) must be able to function without the animated background in case of the user turning off the background
- All animation must stop after 30 seconds
- Animation must occur in the background area and must never overlap page content
- Uninitiated Floating layers are not allowed in conjunction with an animated background
- Ensure the animation areas blend in with the rest of the background smoothly
- While the animation areas can be clickable, the rest of the background area isn’t clickable
Notes
- A standard close button symbol will be added in the upper inside corner of each of the animated background panels
- There is always a 10px buffer area on each side of the page between the custom background and the page itself
- If your execution includes a Screening Room (see above) that is meant to blend in with the background then the width of the Screening Room should be 992px
- Please be aware that there is also a compact version of the Yahoo! front page where the page is narrower at 782px wide (to see this page click on “Page options” on the top right and select “Switch to compact view”). If your creative is sensitive to such a difference in width then you may need to provide an extra set of creative to cater for users of the compact page
Deliverables
Animation can take place anywhere in the page background area. For best user experience and maximum visibility we recommend an animation area of 160×600 px on each side of the page content. The dimensions are negotiable so please get in touch if you want different dimensions.

CPU Usage
An animated background adds two Flash units to the page, bringing the total to four during a typical custom event. This places enormous strain on the user’s CPU as Flash animation can be processor intensive, especially if several animations run simultaneously. For your event, an initial spike of up to 60% is acceptable in the first five seconds. Thereafter, please make sure CPU usage is kept under 40%.
Supported Browsers
PC: Internet Explorer 6+, FireFox 3+, Chrome
Mac: FireFox 3+, Chrome, Safari
Other browsers or any browser without sufficient Flash and JavaScript support will not show an animated background
