An Expandable event utilises Flash overlays like a Floating event but is more versatile and content-rich as the user opts in by rolling over or clicking on the inline element first.

Generic Example

Deliverables

  • 560×300 FLA and SWF (60K or 100KB combined with the base) (unless in Yahoo! Messenger: 520×280)
  • 300×250 inline FLA, SWF (up to 40KB) and back up image (40KB). Detailed inline specs can be found here
  • Please also include fonts that we may need for publishing the FLAs.

User Initiation

The expansion can be user-initiated by roll-over or click. The corresponding action then must also close the expansion. So a roll-over initiated expansion must be closed on roll-out; a click initiated expansion must be closed on click. Click initiated Expandable ads must also contain a close button that contains the word “Close”. The close button must be clear and visible for the duration of the expanded state. We may also move the close button or use our default close buttons to ensure the best user experience possible.

Exceptions

  • Expandable 300×250 on Yahoo! Answers must be initiated by user click
  • Not available on laposte.net Messagerie, laposte.net Covoiturage or laposte.net Météo
  • On ViaMichelin.de 3rd party vendors are ONLY approved on: Front Page and Travel

Reverse Expandable

On certain sites Reverse Expandables are also allowed. This means the Expandable ad can appear already in its expanded state provided that:

  • the uninitiated expanded state only persists for one second before the ad retracts. Exception: on last.fm, the uninitiated expanded state can persist for 15 seconds before automatically retracting
  • this uninitiated expansion is frequency capped at once per user per day; on subsequent impressions the ad appears in the inline base unit only

Video and Audio

A video can also play in the Expandable overlay. Sound can be automatically turned on if the overlay itself is click-initiated, or be turned on after a one-second delay if it is roll-over-initiated.

Please provide video asset as FLV (2.2MB or below) or uncompressed AVI or MOV at 30 seconds. Video asset specs for videos in the Expanded panel are negotiable, please liaise with your Yahoo! Sales representative to work out specs that will meet your needs.

Audio (sound only) is also available in the Expandable overlay. The audio asset should be supplied as a WAV or MP3 at around 100KB. There must also be controls to mute the audio.

Polite Downloading

Extra Flash assets can also be loaded into the Expandable overlay after it loads. The extra assets should be around 100KB each and the total number of extra assets should be less than 5. Preloaders are highly recommended.

Custom/home-built rich media templates may not be compatible and may need be trafficked through DFA
  • e-planning
  • MediaMind/Eyeblaster
  • Eyewonder
  • Facilitate
