An Overlay Video Ad event interacts with our users in an unobtrusive way by appearing at the bottom of the video player window. The message expands on rollover with the advertiser opting to click to a landing page or video.

If you are building animated SWF based messages, the animation will not be timed correctly unless you include the YACT_OpenCanvasController component on the first frame of your SWF file. This component is part of the Yahoo! Ad Creative Toolkit, and contains the Open Canvas API. If you use a SWF file without using the Open Canvas API, the SWF file will stop on the first frame, and your animation will never play.

Bumper

  • Text based message: Single line, containing max of 45 characters.
  • Image/swf based message: Image and swf asset needs to be 300×20. Swf must be ActionScript 3, Flash 9 (30KB) with back-up image (20KB).

Message

  • Text based message: Contains max of 90 characters. Message will wrap to fit on two lines.
  • Image/swf based message: Image and swf asset needs to be 300×50. Swf must be ActionScript 3, Flash 9 (40KB) with back-up image (20KB).

Video

  • Duration: 10 seconds for minimum length and 60 seconds for maximum length.
  • Formats: Acceptable video formats include AVI, MPG, MOV, WMV. The Yahoo! video encoding process will encode the video into Flash format. Encoded video ad streams will be available for 100, 300, 700 and 1000k bitrates.
  • Scaling: Video Ad aspect ratios can be 4:3 or 16:9. Video will be scaled to show in different size video players.

Option 1: Click to Site

  • Act 1 – Bumper: The bumper attracts consumer attention and previews the advertiser’s message (3 sec)
  • Act 2 – Message (Clickable Banner): The banner delivers the advertiser’s message, encouraging consumers to click (5 sec)
  • Act 3 – (post user click): the user is redirected to the advertiser’s website.

Option 2: Click to Video

  • Act 1 – Bumper: The bumper attracts consumer attention and previews the advertiser’s message (3 sec)
  • Act 2 – Message (Clickable Banner): The banner delivers the advertiser’s message, encouraging consumers to click (5 sec)
  • Act 3 – Video (post user click): The click launches the advertiser’s 10-to-30-second video ad within the video player

How does it work

The overlay ad appears when user initiates video play. When clicked the overlay ad will go directly to a click-through URL.

Deliverables

  • 480×70 FLA, 100KB SWF, CS5 Flash9 AS2 only, exactly 25fps, 10 secs max
  • 300×250 FLA (companion ad) is optional but highly recommended, 50KB SWF, Flash 9 AS2 only, 24fps or below, 30 secs max and 40KB JPG or GIF, must have complete border

Important Notes

  • No sound
  • No rollover animations/buttons allowed (will not function) – allowed only on the 300×250 but on click or rollover
  • Background (with max 80% alpha) and major objects for full 70 px height of overlay
  • Text/animations may appear up to 70 px and need to be opaque
  • 300×250 must have complete border
  • Make sure that you include a compelling call to action on the overlay (i.e. watch companion content, interact with ad, play video)
  • Frequency cap: Minimum at 1 impression per user per hour
  • Please do not use _root, _level0 or set _lockroot = true; as this published SWF will be loaded into a parent file
  • If companion ad is not provided, no other advertiser’s creative will appear next to your overlay

Max 10 seconds (after 10 secs the ad hides on the side and can be displayed again by clicking on the button). Pos­si­bil­ity of scaling. Ori­gin must be fixed at top left. Back­ground must be no more than 80% opaque. Other ele­ments must be opaque.

How does it work

Step 1: The video con­tent requested by the user loads normally, accom­pa­nied by a 300×250.

Step 2 : Once the video begins to play, the Over­lay Ad appears on top of the video. The range of the Over­lay Ad can be con­fig­ured. The max­i­mum length of appear­ance is 10 seconds.
